How does Poe portary the characters in the story "The Pit and the Pendulum"?

it has been a really long time since i read it……..but

doesn’t the guy wake up in the dungeon or dark dank place. I thought he was the only character in the story besides the pendulum itself. I always took the story to be metaphorical for life and torture emotionally. I dont think it can be interpreted one way.
